This might go down as the Year of the Feist.
On the heels of her ubiquitous "1234" iPod ad song and with an expected big Grammy night coming Sunday, Canadian singer Leslie Feist garnered the 2007 Shortlist Music Prize today for her album The Reminder.
The Shortlist Prize, now in its seventh year, is widely regarded as the top indie music honor in the US. It recognizes the best album released between January and November 2007 that has yet to be certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America for US shipments of 500,000 units or more. The Reminder has only recently eclipsed the 500,000 copies mark and has not yet been certified gold.
Feist is the second female artist to win the prize, following Cat Power, who won the award last year for The Greatest. She beat out the likes of Arcade Fire, Burial, Justice, LCD Soundsystem, M.I.A., Spoon, Stars, Wilco, and Working for a Nuclear Free City.
Feist was chosen by a panel of five Listmakers: recording artists Gary Lightbody (Snow Patrol) and Ronnie Vannucci (the Killers), journalist Rev. Moose (CMJ), radio DJ Chris Douridas (KCRW), and the hosts of Hunnypot Internet Radio.
The Reminder was the "album of the year for 2007 or any year I can think of: it's modern and classic all at once," Lightbody said in a statement. "There are so many kinds of beauty in this record."
